It was a busy day at school yesterday, a half-day of gift-giving, parties, and communion chapel before the Christmas break. Down in the 7th/8th grade wing they actually did some school work for an hour or so; Paul had a big Social Studies test, for instance. But in the 5th/6th grade wing, where the library is, it was a wild morning, with kids coming in and out to check out books, give us small gifts, and to enjoy the holiday decorations one last time.
On the door we had a Christmas countdown, which yesterday read 6!
On the white board just inside the door, my colleague had made a fabulous Christmas tree out of green ribbon. Under it were notes from the faculty with their Christmas wishes for the children.
Here's a closeup of the ribbon loops that made up the tree; pretty clever, yes? I'm so lucky to have an aide that makes such inventive displays! The kids loved it.
On my desk I set up a small Department 56 church and manger scene, displayed an origami ornament that my Secret Santa had given me, and hung Paul's Lego ornaments from the counter.
Here's a detail of the church. The red lights also came from my Secret Santa.
I brought in other pieces from my Department 56 and Lemax collection to see if the students liked looking at it. They sure did! Everyone found it quite fascinating. Boys and girls from 5th grade to 8th grade would stand staring at it, looking at everything, wondering how it was put together and how the things that moved, like the skating ring, worked. It was fun to watch them, to talk with them about it, and to see how they rearranged the figurines (I told them they could).
About two thirds of the counter was taken up with Santa's house, the elves' skating ring, and the Naughty and Nice Detective Agency.
On the other end was the village, with a "Think Snow" house and a gazebo.
That's so cute!
