We made it!

John's fall turned out to be fairly seriously, leaving him with a neck fracture.  The MRI revealed another problem with his neck for which surgery was warranted. He’s being operated on as I write this and he’ll have weeks of recovery ahead of him, but the hope is some old problems may be healed along with the new one, and our outlook is optimistic.

But John and Dawn's trip to Maui with us had to be cancelled, which was a big disappointment.  Ben and I decided to still go and we've had to reorient our expectations for this vacation.  We'll do the foursome another time, I'm sure.

We’re in Maui now staying a couple of nights at The Inn at Mama’s Fish House and here is the view from our lanai this morning.

With a prediction of  snow in Boulder for the morning of our flight we decided to stay overnight at the airport which turned out to be an excellent decision.  Even so, with a flight delay for de-icing and some surprising hassles at the gate related to COVID clearances — I will spare you those details!— we had a long and occasionally stressful day of travel, which was not made easier by being masked most of the time.

It was a real testament to our emotional maturity that we didn’t bite each other’s head off as we got out of the airport,  got our rental car, made our way to Mama’s and found our cottage.  But 15 hours after we left the airport hotel we were sitting in Mama’s restaurant worn out and half asleep, being pampered and fed a fabulous dinner; a luscious seafood curry for me and native Hawaiian  fish and mushrooms for Ben.  Back in the cottage we fell into bed and thankfully had a great night of sleep.

Here’s a view from our airport hotel window showing what we left behind.

Today we’re “just chilling” but later this afternoon we’ll make our way up to the Haleakala volcano to see the sunset from 10,000 feet up.
