Yesterday we drove two hours across the island to visit the Volcanoes National Park, which features the Kilauea Volcano, most known recently from its eruptions in 1986, 1992, 2018, 2021, and January 2023. The ranger told us that we missed seeing flowing lava by just five months, but we saw plenty of steaming vents.
Then it was off to see the popular lava tube tunnel. The walk down was through a rain forrest....
...and the tube itself was just lit well enough to see the encasing lava walls. Pretty cool.
We drove about forty minutes down the Chain of Craters Road and saw miles and miles of black lava stone which had flowed down to the ocean.
I liked seeing all the patterns that the flow up left behind...
....the contrast of the blue sea against the rocks....
...and of course Ben enjoying it all. .
Years ago when I was in western Oregon, I got to see lava fields (much older than the ones you saw here:). Fascinating and scary at the same time. Mysteries of Earth.
ReplyDeleteI'm enjoying your vacation vicariously. thanks!
