A Welcome Visitor

As I was leaving the house to pick up Paul from Evan's after school today, I looked out the side door windows and saw a hawk sitting on our fence post. I was so excited! For years we've a hawk flying around our woods, and just once I swear the sky darkened as he rushed down to catch something, but I'd never seen him close up. He hung around long enough for me to grab my camera and get a few shots through the glass. But when I gingerly opened the door for a better view, he flew off.

At Evan's house I told his Grandmother that I'd seen a hawk in my yard. She said there were two families near us who were unfortunate enough to have "a hawk in their yards" and because of that they "couldn't keep any birds." I remembered how while the hawk was out today the area was eerily free of the cardinals, woodpeckers, jays, nuthatches, and chickadees that usually hang out at the bird feeder and bird bath. Suddenly I realized that what I thought was so exciting could be seen instead as a big problem. It's all a matter of perspective, I guess.
