Come Up to the Lab and See What's on the Slab
Today I went to the counter top company. I thought I was going to see "my slab" of granite and tell them which parts of it to use for which counters. What really happened was that I was shown several slabs of granite, including one that matched the sample I had selected in the kitchen showroom, and asked to select the one I wanted for my counter tops.
It was neat to see a whole warehouse full of hanging slabs of polished granite. These heavy slabs are moved around by the hanging mechanism you see in the top photo. And it was so helpful to see big slabs of color choices instead of little squares of samples. Of course, I ended up making a new selection. While I loved my initial selection, I had been vaguely worried that it had too much gold in it. The warehouse had it worked up in a sample counter top and while it was beautiful, it did, indeed, have too much gold in it. So after some debating I ended up with a piece with no gold, just a beautiful light beige with specks of brown, and I'm happy. (I know this photo makes it look like it's white granite with black specks, but it isn't. )
As for telling them which part of the slab to use for which counters, that didn't happen and that was fine by me. Just picking the slab took all the decision making energy I had for one day!
