"Maine: The Way Life Should Be"

What a great vacation! Perfect blue skies, just-right temperatures, no humidity, and not a drop of rain --beautiful conditions for exploring Portland and camping in Acadia National Park. It's hard to say what was the most enjoyable -- the wonderful scenery, the fun activities we did each day, or just spending time with Ben and Paul and Robbie, one of Paul's two "brothers" who now live in Pennsylvania.

We all loved our time in Portland, especially the Windjammer harbor cruise we took one glorious afternoon. The nice skipper let the boys put their feet through the scuppers to feel the cold ocean water as it zipped by.

The beaches seemed so much prettier than back home, with their interesting rocks, seaweed, and tidal pool findings.

I had my doubts about camping, but it turned out just fine. It was fun to meet people in the campground and compare notes, to sit together by the cozy light of the campfire and lanterns each night, and to watch for shooting stars when I got up to go to the bath house during the night.

We went kayaking, sailing, and whale watching, but I suspect that the boys would say that one of their favorite things was throwing rocks into the ocean whenever they had the chance. As is so often the case, the simple things were the best.

  1. Mary - That looks like the perfect vacation! My sister used to live in Maine - one of her grown sons still lives there near Portland! She & her hubby often go to Portland on their vacations, too!
