I recently bought several books in the Zigzag series by National Geographic and I really enjoy using them. The each contain a poem, interesting pictures, colorful and eye-catching graphics, and supporting facts, all of which make the subject fun to learn about. Yesterday I read this one for Story Time and all the classes liked it. We actually read through it twice, first focusing on the poem itself and then a second time to look at everything else the book offers. Then I compared it to Bear Stays Up for Christmas by Karma Wilson to show the difference between fiction and nonfiction books. It worked out great and was a timely topic for the season.
While they were in the library the little ones enjoyed looking at the pine cones and pumpkins lining the white board tray, right at their eye level.
Since they are so small, they had a harder time seeing this fabulous Thanksgiving display, but the Middle School students are really enjoying it. I'm so lucky to have such a talented library aide. All I had to do was just mention the idea of showing a cornucopia of books and she ran with it. The older kids stop and look at it and it's heartening to hear them say to each other, "Oh, I read this book and this book" and "These are good books." Maybe next year we'll give the kids blank book covers and let them write the names of books they are grateful for and put them in the cornucopia It won't be as colorful, but it would sure be interesting to see which books they'd add.
