Story Time Monday & a Cute Winter Display

Snow was the theme for Story Time Monday this week, though thinking about and wishing for some real snow didn't do much good; tonight we're stuck with mostly sleet and ice. Instead of outdoor fun in the snow tomorrow, it looks like we'll be chipping ice off the windshields and slipping and sliding into work.

Still, it was fun to read Lisa's Passen's The Abominable Snow Teacher, with its funny tale of how a strict teacher goes wild after being zapped by magic-infused electrical wires on a snow day and starts spewing out school test questions to kids who had been enjoying their day off. My Kindergartners thought it was quite funny.

I thought the younger kids would miss much of the book's humor, so I read them Alice Schertle's All You Need for a Snowman. I love the pacing in this book. It starts out simply:

One small snowflake fluttering down, that's all you need for a snowman......Except for....

and then slowly, page by page, and with striking illustrations by Barbara Lavallee, the steps for building a snowman are described. My little three-year olds were quite captivated by it. It's always so humbling to remember how new the world is to them, and how wondrous.

Speaking of wondrous, the library aide has made another wondrous display for the library door and white board. She made the cutest mitten and snowflakes to welcome kids into the library....

...and then used that same theme on the whiteboard to invite kids to share their suggestions for books to read on a snowy day.

You can see that we've already got some suggestions. It's fun to see what they choose to share.
