Mathew 6:19

It was such a busy weekend, filled with fun things like movies, shopping, dinner out, bowling, swimming, and gardening, as well as quite a bit of business related to the possible move of my mother to an assisted living facility.

Yesterday Paul and I went to Sloan & Kenyon's auction warehouse to make a final family review of items from Ben's mother's estate before they are put up for sale. Seeing all her "things" laid out like that led me to think of the Bible verse that I quoted at my father's funeral:

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Mathew 6:19

I felt a bit sobered by this reminder of that truth.

And yet, I also felt a kind of celebration in seeing again the things that Suzanne loved. Mostly out of sentiment, we claimed this table. I'll always think of how excited and mysterious she would get when she'd mention the secret compartment that it contains and how she hid certain pieces of jewelry in it.

I also tagged this clock, which she had on her mantle and which bespeaks her sense of elegance and tradition.

Paul was on the hunt for a vase of peacock feathers which he remembered, and was so happy when he found them.

He's a treasure which I hope will be part of my legacy.
