Crayons to Calculators

Ben and Paul and I volunteered yesterday for Crayons to Calculators, a local initiative to provide school supplies to kids in need.  We unpacked supplies from boxes, broke down packing boxes for recycling, added supplies to backpacks, and loaded filled backpacks into shipping boxes.  It was hard physical work, but we felt good about it and I liked seeing how our monetary donations to this program actually translated into something good for kids.

This is just one of several big piles of empty backpacks.

Receiving, unpacking, and organizing school supplies for more than 10,000 backpacks results in a lot of empty boxes.

It takes three weeks to get all the backpacks filled and to the schools.

We worked hard but there were some fun moments.   I had to laugh when I saw Paul looking like a turtle as he carried this big box back from the recycling bins to be filled up again with empty boxes.

Paul turns fifteen today.   Happy Birthday, Paul!
