We've had a cold couple of days and about six inches of snow fell the past two nights. The kind of days where you just want to hang out at home in front of the fire. But a dog must be walked, and that's just a fact so yesterday afternoon I took Turbo up to our friend's house to drop off some leftover lobster Mac & cheese we were swapping for some of their leftover cassoulet. Both great dishes for snowy and cold weather!
But couldn't I have just driven up? Well, yes, but.....a dog must be walked, so walk we did. I was rewarded with a short but pleasant visit with my friends before Turbo and I headed back to home, as well as being able to see some lovely snow scenes along the way.
But today was different. The snow wasn't a thrill anymore and today's high of 21 just seemed too darn cold. I had no reason to be outside except for --- you guessed it -- a dog must be walked. Of course Ben could have done the honors but he was gone all morning and then immediately started shoveling when he got home, which is another job that must be done and I'd rather walk Turbo than shovel so there we are.
But I had gotten started on a little holiday gift I wanted to sew and it involved math and was taking some concentration which I hated to break. But as the time went by Turbo reminded me that I still needed walking and it seemed clear that I was the one who was going to do it. So I bundled myself up, got Turbo into his harness, and we started up the hill.
I'm sorry to say that I wasn't in the best of humor. Actually, I was feeling rather put out and reminding myself that I had really wanted a dog and that we really loved this one, wasn't helping. After a few blocks I was ready to start back home. Turbo had other ideas. He "put on the brakes" and wouldn't move, which is his way of saying "I don't want to go that way." We stood there a few minutes while I resigned myself to a longer walk than I wanted, and then we started on up the hill again, heading right up to Chautauqua Park.
As we crested the hill, we saw this sight:
We stopped and stood admiring the view. In a few minutes the light shifted, drawing us in for a closer look.
To say it was beautiful is an understandment. It was magical.
I would have never seen it if Turbo hadn't dragged me out of the house. Thank you, sweet doggie.
