Yesterday I was one of three faculty members who chaperoned twenty students downtown to take a lunch cruise on the Spirit of Washington. The trip was a reward for students who had raised $250 or more in the school's recent Sponsored Spelling fundraiser, in which students found sponsors who pledged money for each correct word the student spelled from a specific list depending on their grade level.
I think I was asked to chaperone because I knew how to navigate the Metro after all my years commuting downtown. Whatever the reason, I was tickled to be included since I enjoy being with our students on these types of outings, love boat rides, and have never seen Washington from the water. We went down river, past the National Airport and under the new Woodrow Wilson bridge near Alexandria, and then back up the river for a great view of the Washington Monument.
