The Weekend

With everything else going on, we've been a tad behind in getting our new "square foot" gardens loaded up with dirt. Paul and I finished this work off this weekend, toting in bags of dirt and compost and mixing it all up with the peat moss that Ben had gotten. Once all that hard work was done, we happily started the fun job of actually planting the gardens. There are three. Paul's has a Marigold, a bush cucumber, and a strawberry plant.

One of my boxes has a basil plant, a pepper plant, an eggplant, a tomato plant, some tarragon, a Marigold, and some bush bean seeds.

The other box has a trellis which clever Ben made, and three cucumber and one tomato plant that will climb up that trellis. The rest of the box is empty at the moment.

We'll build one last box this weekend, a long and narrow one about 2 1/2 feet by 10 feet, which I think will just hold perennials.

Work on the deck and porch is wrapping up and I'm waiting for all the details to be completed before showing you before and after photos. But I did want to share this photo of the first dinner out on the newly screened and painted porch. My sister-in-law came for a visit while our husbands were away, and we had a lovely time sitting out on the redone porch eating a delicious steak dinner.

As the sun set, I lit these new lanterns that I bought at Pottery Barn. Aren't they great?

  1. Lemon basil! If you have any room, put some in. It makes the best pesto. Yous garden looks so much neater than mine!
