Happy Valentine's Day!

Thursdays start extra early since Paul has band before school starts, so we had a quick but heartfelt exchange of Valentine's greetings before he headed out this morning.

Cards and candy are the usual order of the day, but this year is something special since it marks thirty-five years that Ben and I have been together.  Yes, I did say thirty-five!

It was in February, actually, that I fell in love with him over a wonderful dinner at L'Auberge Chez Francois way out in the Virginia countryside.  We'd had an ice storm and driving was risky, but we went anyway since reservations were so hard to get and we had been so looking forward to going.  I was worried about the weather, Ben's driving (he wasn't as careful and patient way back then!), the cost (being a feminist I had mixed feelings about him paying for such an expensive date!), and just worried in general about this fellow who was starting to mean so much to me.  But we went, we relaxed and had fun, and gradually I could feel my heart opening up to him and by the end of the evening I knew I was in love.

That dinner was a few days after Valentine's Day.  I remember that I wasn't sure just what kind of presents we would be exchanging on Valentine's Day since our relationship hadn't quite defined itself at that point, so I made Ben some chocolate chip cookies and packed them into a shoebox that I covered with wrapping paper decorated with hearts.  He seemed to like it.  He had bought me some candy and while he was out shopping had gotten into a small accident with his orange Pinto station wagon.  I was so glad to see him and know that he was okay.  Oh, the things we remember!

Anyway, for our thirty-fifth Valentine's Day together Ben gave me a gift beautifully wrapped up by a local jeweler.  Inside was a lovely sparkly bracelet which I love and which I'm wearing right this minute.

Wishing all my friends and family a Happy Valentine's Day!
