Recently my brother, Glenn, celebrated his 65th birthday by jumping off the Stratosphere Hotel in Las Vegas. I thought that was pretty amazing in and of itself, but what really impressed me was that he did it as a fundraiser for the local chapter of GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network. The mission of this group is to
"...ensure that every student, in every school, to be valued and treated with respect, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. We believe that all students deserve a safe and affirming school environment where they can learn and grow."
Well, that's a mission I can agree with, and as I looked over the GLSEN web site I was pretty impressed with its programs, especially the ThinkB4YouSpeak campaign which promotes the end of such hurtful phrases like "That's so gay" and "You play like a girl." I got out my checkbook and made a donation.
Happy Birthday, Glenn! And may you have many more jumps in the years ahead!
