January 20: Greetings from Napili!

Woke up this morning in Napoli, Maui, which is several miles north of Lahaina, and almost immediately spotted a whale slowly moving across the big channel between our resort and the island of Lanai. Nice way to start the day! 

It took us most of yesterday to get here.  We were up at 5:00, on the airport bus by 7:30, but not on our 12:00 flight until 2:00 due to mechanical problems. Landed in Maui about 6:00 and arrived at the resort just in time to order dinner and a Mai Tai before the kitchen closed at 9:00. This busy day had been preceded by two busy days of trip prep—there sure are a lot of things you have to do before a vacation!—so we fell exhausted into bed.

But it was all worth while to wake up this morning to the ocean and the flowers and the soft breeze and, of course, the first whale sighting.
