Why I love my job
One of the things I love about my job is when a box of new books arrives. I select and order books for both the Preschool and the Middle School collections, and it's hard work since there are so many good books from which to choose. But receiving the books is just plain fun.
I love the excitement of spotting the tale-tale red & white shipping box when it arrives in the front office, triumphantly carrying it down to the library, carefully cutting it open, removing all the paper "filler," and finally uncovering the riches. Even though I've read reviews about the books and have often even looked at them in area libraries and bookstores before I order them, actually seeing them and browsing them once they arrive is a real thrill. Surely opening a box of much-anticipated new books has got to be one of the great pleasures of being a school librarian!
Last year I placed a good-size order once a month, but this year I'm spreading the fun out by ordering smaller orders every two weeks or so. Today's shipment included Laurie Anderson's Chains, Gary Paulsen's Hatchet, Siobhan Dowd's London Eye Mystery, and Dan Gutman's Nightmare at the Book Fair, any one of which I could have sat right down and started reading. But I'm currently captured by Cynthia Kadahota's Cracker; the Best Dog in Vietnam, so these new gems will just need to wait.
