Man's Work

While I tackled some housework yesterday afternoon, the guys headed out to the yard to tackle the task of taking out the stump of the old apple tree that Ben had cut down a week or so ago. By the time I had caught up with them they had dug a big hole around the stump and were hooking it up to a thick wire which was attached to something called a "come-along" that Ben had attached to the tractor.

The boys took turns tightening the wire by ratcheting up the come-along. They seemed to be really enjoying the task, and kept strict count of how many times they each got to ratchet the wire.
Then Ben got on the tractor and tried to pull the stump out. It wouldn't budge, so he got off, told the boys to stand back, and whacked away at the dirt around the stump with the pick axe.

As soon as he was done, the boys jumped up to rachet up the wire again.

Ben got on the tractor again and this time the stump broke away from the dirt. The boys were quite thrilled.

Here's the proud workmen posing for a victory photograph.
