For the two days of Fall break we are having a "staycation," meaning we didn't go to Disney World or St. John's or London, but instead all three of us are home enjoying each other's company doing some fun things together. Today the plan was to go downtown to the National Museum of the America Indian, but Paul had a session with his reading coach and I had a doctor's appointment and we did a little leaf raking and house cleaning and before we knew it the clock said 12:30. We decided to accomplish an item that had been on our "to do" list for a long time; getting our passport applications turned in. This was fun since it was a big tick off the list and puts us a big step closer to taking a real out-of-the-country vacation over spring break.
Since I had already found all our old passports, hunted up Paul's birth certificate and downloaded and completed the applications, the first step was get passport photos. The last time Ben & I had passport photos taken we went to a real photo studio where I'm pretty sure they still used film cameras. But today we just popped into the local drug store where they pulled down a backdrop from the ceiling, took quick digital shots, printed and cut them, and sent us on our way in a matter of minutes.
The line at the Post Office was surprisingly short and the clerk pleasantly knowledgeable and competent, so our applications were completed and submitted in quick order.
We celebrated by heading to a restaurant we've just discovered, feeling very much on vacation as we settled in for a good, but late, lunch.
