"In Loving Memory"

My mother's funeral was on Thursday, with a service at her church and burial at the area's veteran cemetery. Her four children spoke about her life, the loving home she created, and her many quiet acts of charity.

Like at my father's funeral, there was a police escort to the cemetery. I rode with with my brothers and sister and their spouses in a limo, and we joked about how my mother would have waved to everyone along the route.

Paul was one of the pall bearers, and handled himself in a very grown-up manner.

Later, my family met for one last gathering at my mother's house, enjoying pizza, Chinese food, each other's company, and taking the last photo of the grandchildren on Grandma's couch.

It was sad to know that it was our last time together there. My mother's legacy -- a large, close-knit family. Now our challenge is to maintain that closeness without her guiding presence.
