"A Colorado Christmas": The Last Day

Today was the last day of our Colorado Christmas vacation, and it was a great one!

We started the day by doing some cross country skiing at the Devil's Thumb Ranch.  The trails were well groomed, the equipment was high quality, and the scenery was breath-taking.  I hadn't skied in decades and was mindful of my almost-healed hip injury, but I picked it up right away and had a lot of fun while getting a great workout.  The trail we took was mostly flat and I walked down the one good size hill, not being at all confident of my ability to get down it without falling.

It was very cold and I didn't take many photos since my fingers froze the minute I took my gloves off!

Later we went on a traditional horse drawn sleigh ride, something that's been on my "bucket list" for a while now.  We tried to take a sleigh ride when we were in Lake Placid a few years ago, but there wasn't enough snow.  I was assured there would be plenty of snow in the Colorado Rockies and indeed there was.

It was still cold, but the temperatures were in the low teens, not the minus degrees we had yesterday.

Towards the end of the ride we stopped at a fire pit and had hot chocolate and roasted marshmallows.

After our ride we had a late lunch at a place called The Ditch, which was recommended by the inn owners.  It was a local bar and it seemed like everyone knew each other.

The folks around us were quite friendly and we had a fun time chatting while we drank our killer margaritas and ate our fish tacos.

  1. Didn't you just LOVE that sleigh ride! I did that once in Colorado and it was magical. Those horses are BIG! And nothing better than killer margaritas and fish tacos, I think they're my favorite.
