It was a lovely day today and although I had plenty of small tasks to do in preparation for our departure this week for Hawaii I took the time to do something special with Turbo. As a change from our neighborhood walks we went out to Coot Lake, next to the Boulder Reservoir which is about five miles north of the city. When the Reservoir was built in the 1950's dirt for its dam made a big hole. It filled with water and became known as Coot Lake, a place where swimming in the nude was a common practice. This was way back when "hippies" had discovered Boulder and made it their home, so no one cared about a little nudity and the city actually designated the site as a nude beach.
By the 80's, however, the practice was greatly discouraged and the lake became a place beloved by the city's many dogs. They are allowed off leash here if they have a "voice and sight" control license, which many do, including Turbo. Not only can they run around and have fun but about half of the lake has beach access for dogs and you see them jumping in, swimming, fetching, and generally do all the things that dogs love to do. Turbo is not a water dog but he does love to be off leash to sniff all the good smells and to chase his tennis balls.
I love the beautiful views to the foothills in the east.
And the lake itself, which is quite lovely and peaceful.
This time of year the fall colors are particularly pretty, and while there isn't much red there is a lot of yellow trees and golden grasses.
Here's Turbo with a majestic stance and a happy high tail. Happy dog, happy me.
