Shine On, Harvest Moon

Did you see the full moon last night or tonight? We had a tremendous thunderstorm last night, after which a beautiful orange moon hung in the sky. Tonight it doesn't have that amazing color, but it is still quite lovely. I went out in the field to try taking photos of it as it sits majestically over our house, and got this halfway decent shot.

Last night when I saw it, I thought it was a Blue Moon, meaning the second full moon in a month. But on the news at the gym this morning I heard that this is a Harvest Moon, meaning that it is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox, which marks the first day of fall. Tonight Ben told me that it is a very special Harvest Moon because it is the first one in nineteen years to shine exactly on the first day of fall. So no wonder it is demanding our attention.

Our first day of fall was hot and humid, continuing a long trend over the past few months. Things have been so unpleasant around here that we were named #1 for having the worst weather by the Weather Channel. And this was after being named second for having the worst winter!

I'm heading out to Ohio tomorrow to celebrate my nephew's wedding, along with my Mom, my brothers and my sister and many of their children. I'll get back Saturday just in time to visit with Ben's Dad, who will be be town. A weekend of family may not sound like fun to some people, but I'm looking forward to it.
