Story Time Monday and a Weather Report

This being the last Monday before Halloween, we went all out on Story Time Monday, bringing in a big spider that lite up, some cool felt bats, a Frankenstein puppet, and some yummy treats (small pretzels with melted Hershey Kisses topped with candy corn). For the older children I choose Halloween Night by Marjorie Murray with illustrations by Brandon Dorman. His "leap off the page and into your face" graphics really enlivened the story of how a group of trick-or-treaters innocently approached a house where a Halloween party is being hosted by two ogres. They are invited to join the fun, but soon run away from all the scary sights. The kids found it more fun than scary, but just to be sure, I chose How Do You Know It's Halloween by Dian Regan for the three-year-olds. I used to read this "lift the flap" book to Paul when he was little, and liked it so much that I've used it in Story Time the past two years for the tiny ones who are just grasping what Halloween is all about.

You'd never guess it from these photos, all of which were taken today, but the air here in the D.C. suburbs is not clear and crisp and delightfully autumnal. Despite the beautiful fall colors in the landscape, we've had two day of quite warm weather coupled with the threat of rain. Meaning.....it's been hot and humid again. Cooler weather is expected by Friday, and I'm looking forward to it.

I think Fetcher is, too.
